Norine became very ill and tragically passed away July 13, 1944 at the age of almost 29. It was devastating to the family. Joe was unable to care for the children by himself and work. Those were the days before government assistance. He was employed in the oil fields and at other jobs and did the best he possibly could. He had to make a hard decision on what he felt was best for the children. So they went to live in other homes and orphanages. He saw them occasionally and became much closer to them as adults. Joe got remarried to Ola Ellison.
Joe died of a probable stroke in his home January 31, 1969 in Seminole, OK. He was buried in West Lawn Cemetery in Henryetta, OK.
